American Destiny

By 2045, the United States is projected to become a majority-minority country. We are embarking on a new long-term project about this demographic transformation, and how it intersects with politics, housing, education, healthcare, racial equity and environmental justice.

The first installment of the project, set in Gwinnett County, Georgia, was published in TIME magazine.

In the week leading up to Election Day, our team headed to Norcross, Georgia – the most diverse city in one of Georgia’s most diverse counties. In just a decade, the town had transitioned from majority white to minority white thanks to a growing LatinX population. These new realities indicate a major political shift, splitting a historically red county down the middle and turning it purple. In the days leading up to November 3rd, we followed five locals from different political, religious and ethnic backgrounds to get a ground level view of this microcosm of our politically divided nation, whose citizens are fighting to find common ground.

In the coming months, we plan to explore other American counties that have transitioned to majority-minority status since 2000, examining how that shift has impacted issues like education, housing, and healthcare.
