Stories from the Pandemic
Since the outbreak of civil war in Syria in March 2011, more than two million Syrians have fled their homes. More than half of them are children under the age of 18. Syria’s Lost Generation is a short documentary that provides an intensely personal account of two Syrian teenagers living unsettled lives as refugees.
As the conflict drags on, children have been streaming across Syria’s borders to escape the violence in their homeland. This generation of children is being shaped not only by violence and displacement but also by an absence of prospects for their future.
Young people have been adjusting to life under quarantine while processing the potential impact on their families’ health and economic security. In response, Newest Americans created Stories from the Pandemic, a web platform for young people to document their experience in real time using photography, video, writing and audio. Our goal is to give students an opportunity to observe, reflect, and share their personal stories in order to feel less isolated while becoming frontline documentarians for their local community and beyond.
Stories from the Pandemic is a collaboration between the Newark Board of Education and Newest Americans, in partnership with Talking Eyes Media. Support comes from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and the Dodge Foundation.
